When you are admitted to Graduate School, you are given an expected graduation date that is 6 years from when you are admitted which we refer to as your Statute of Limitations (SOL). You can find your Graduation Date/SOL in your SPIRE.

Once you advance to candidacy, you are automatically given an additional 5 years to your expected graduation date.
The GPM will reach out to when their SOL will be expiring. The student and their advisor will need to send answers to the following questions to the GPM to submit an extension request:
- Choose length of extension (one year or two)
- Explanation/justification for request (100 character max)
- Outline expected progress for the time requested, including estimated dates of completion for milestones
- Outline how the student will be mentored to ensure they will meet new deadlines outlined above
- Is this the student’s first extension (yes or no)
- If this is not the first extension, did the student meet deadlines set out in the previous extension request (yes or no)
- If the student did not meet deadlines defined for a previous extension, are there extenuating circumstances?
Please Note: The Dean of SBS is cracking down on SOL extensions. They may outright approve extensions (and are more likely to for first time extensions), but they can also add stipulations that need to be completed before the SOL can be extended again.

A graduate student is considered as having full time status if they are enrolled in 9 or more credits (audited courses do not count toward enrollment status).
Doctoral candidates working on research for a dissertation may be considered full-time or half-time, regardless of the number of dissertation credits they register.
For international students must be enrolled full-time to maintain visa status.
If you need full time status (i.e. you aren't enrolled in 9 or more credits) - the GPM can submit full time status on your behalf.
